Here at Naim Audio we have an exciting opportunity for a music-loving Principal Software Engineer to join us and form part of our passionate in-house R&D team designing and implementing latest embedded software technologies to ensure that our products deliver cutting edge audio performance. In order for our products to pass the rigorous quality testing – each component has to earn its place.

Unlike most other consumer electronics, Naim Audio products are not designed to be replaced three or four years down the line, they are built for sustainability, as an investment to enable the customer to enjoy many years of incredible musical experience.

Reporting to the Head of Software Development and collaborating with other software engineers as well as Hardware and Test engineers you will be as passionate as we are about software development and embedded firmware design.

Fundamentally your role is to be part of the UK team that ensures that our customers continue to receive the same uncompromised listening experiences that they have done for nearly 50 years; we seek to go beyond an audiophile sound that is technically brilliant, and strive for the glorious emotional experience of the music.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate with the Software Development Team, Electronic Engineering Team and R&D Test Team to create world-class audio products.
Develop embedded software written mainly in C and sometimes C++.
Key player and technical authority in architectural and technical planning phases
Collaborative development of good coding practice.
Working with the Electronics design team, write firmware to assist hardware bring-up and debugging of new designs.
Provide software support for the transition of products from R&D to mass production.

Skills & Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Strong C/C++ embedded programming skills.
  • Familiarity with electronics debugging tools and techniques.
  • Experience with designing, implementing and debugging low level drivers.
  • Unit testing and Test Driven Development.
  • Automated testing of embedded systems.
  • Advise/collaborate cross-discipline on technical matters (software/hardware/test/design etc).

Other Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with modern software development tools and techniques (Git, Jira, Agile)
  • Advanced version control i.e. skilful enough to help / mentor other engineers.
  • Active participant/leader in project planning processes.
  • Proactive approach to documentation and collaborative development.
  • Excellent technical author.
  • Adopts a leader role for responsible areas to ensure delivery of projects
  • Contribute original and novel ideas to architectural design phase.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Ability to work at a high level of autonomy keeping project goals constantly in sight.

Beneficial additional skills:

  • Experience with operating systems such as Linux and FreeRTOS.
  • DSP and audio algorithm knowledge.
  • Continuous integration and delivery infrastructure such as Jenkins and Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience of implementing on-product user interfaces.
  • Knowledge of networking technologies and audio streaming principles.
  • Knowledge of common audio-visual interfaces such as SPDIF and HDMI.
  • Experience in the consumer electronics industry.

Qualification / Experience

  • Degree qualified (2.1 minimum) in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or similar engineering related discipline.
  • Demonstrable competency in one or more technical areas.
  • Experience developing software for embedded products.
  • A proven track record of shipping reliable and maintainable software.
  • 2+ years of software development.

Hours of work:

37.5 Hours a week, fairly flexible in start / finish times, Remote working 1-2 days a week.
