Ripping CDs with Naim Core

The Uniti Core is Naim’s dedicated music server and CD ripper, designed to help you build a high-quality digital music library with ease. Whether you're ripping your first CD or troubleshooting an issue, this guide explains how the process works, what to expect, and how to resolve common problems.

How to Rip a CD

Ripping a CD with the Uniti Core is simple and mostly automatic:

  1. Insert the CD into the Core’s disc drive.
  2. The unit will begin ripping automatically.
  3. Metadata (album name, artist, track titles, and artwork) is retrieved from online databases.
  4. The ripped files are stored in your designated music store on internal or external storage.

? You can manage ripped content and storage settings using the Focal & Naim app.

What Happens If the CD Has Already Been Ripped?

If you insert a CD that has already been ripped:

  • The Uniti Core will recognize the duplicate and skip re-ripping.
  • No duplicate files will be created.
  • You can manually re-rip if needed by deleting the original version first.

What Happens If There’s No Internet Connection?

If the Uniti Core is not connected to the internet during ripping:

  • The CD will still be ripped, but no metadata or artwork will be retrieved.
  • The album will appear as “Unknown” with generic track names.
  • Once internet is restored, you can re-look up the album using the app to fetch metadata.

Troubleshooting CD Ripping Issues

If your Uniti Core cannot rip a CD:

1. Check the CD Format

  • Only standard audio CDs are supported.
  • Data discs or enhanced CDs (such as HDCD) will not be recognized.

2. Inspect the Disc

  • Dirty or scratched discs may fail to rip.
  • Try cleaning the disc or using another copy.

3. Restart the Uniti Core

  • Power cycle the unit and try again.

4. Check Storage Availability

  • Ensure there is enough space on the internal or external drive.
  • Use the app to verify storage status.

5. Update Firmware

  • Make sure your Uniti Core is running the latest software via the Focal & Naim app.

Final Tips

  • When configuring the music store, you can choose between WAV or FLAC file formats.
  • You can convert files to FLAC or other formats using third-party software if needed.
  • Always keep your Uniti Core connected to the internet for accurate metadata and artwork.
