Powering on/off your Naim server

Naim music servers are designed to operate reliably and efficiently as part of your hi-fi system. Whether you're setting up your server for the first time or need to power it down for maintenance, this guide explains the correct procedures for switching your Naim server on and off. Powering On Your Naim Server To switch on your Naim server: Connect the power cable to the rear of the unit and plug it into a mains socket. Press the front panel button once.  The LED will illuminate, and the server will begin its startup sequence. ✓ Once powered on, the server will automatically connect to your network (if previously configured) and begin indexing any connected storage devices. Powering Off Your Naim Server To safely switch off your Naim server: Press and hold the front panel button until the LED turns off. This initiates a controlled shutdown of the server. Disconnect the power cable if you need to fully power down the unit or move it. Avoid unplugging the server without using the front panel button first, as this may interrupt file indexing or cause data loss. Final Tips Leave your server on during normal use to allow continuous indexing and remote access. Use standby mode if supported, to reduce power consumption while keeping the server responsive. Ensure firmware is up to date via the Focal & Naim app for optimal performance and stability.

Troubleshooting connection

Network and HDMI Troubleshooting for Naim Devices Naim products are designed for seamless integration into modern home networks and AV systems. However, occasional issues may arise with network connectivity or HDMI performance. This guide outlines how to identify and resolve common problems. Checking Network Connection Status To verify that your Naim device is connected to a network: Navigate to the Network Settings menu via the device’s setup interface. Look for the Status parameter — it should display “Connected” if the device is successfully linked to a wired or wireless network. Network Troubleshooting Network issues typically fall into two categories: Discovery Problems: The Focal & Naim app or device cannot detect other devices on the network. Connectivity Problems: The device cannot access services like Qobuz, TIDAL, or a local music server. Recommended Steps: Simplify your network: Start with just your router, Naim device, and control device (e.g. smartphone). Reconnect components one by one: Add switches, extenders, or mesh nodes gradually to identify the source of the issue. Use Ethernet where possible: A direct wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi, especially in complex network environments. Use the RouteThis tool: Available in the Focal & Naim app under Help > Network Scan, this tool helps diagnose Wi-Fi issues. HDMI Troubleshooting HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) issues can occur due to compatibility or configuration mismatches between your TV and Naim device. Common Issues and Fixes: No sound or “helicopter” noise: Go to your TV’s Audio Output Settings. Change the format from Auto to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo. This ensures the TV sends a signal format compatible with Naim devices. ARC not working or inconsistent: Ensure the HDMI cable is v1.4 compliant or higher. Plug the Naim device directly into the TV’s ARC-compatible HDMI port. Enable CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) on the TV (may be branded differently depending on the manufacturer). In the Focal & Naim app, go to Settings > Input Settings > HDMI and adjust Auto-Switching if needed. Lip-sync issues: Adjust the Lip Sync setting in the Focal & Naim app under HDMI input settings. TV turns on but no audio: Try toggling the HDMI auto-on setting in the Focal & Naim app. Power cycle both the TV and Naim device. Providing Support Information If you need to contact Naim support, be ready to provide: TV make and model Firmware version of your Naim device HDMI cable type and version Description of the issue and steps taken Any other connected AV equipment This helps the support team replicate and resolve the issue more efficiently.

USB device compatibility

Using USB Storage with Naim Products Naim streaming products support USB storage devices for music playback, but compatibility depends on the format of the drive, the file types, and the device model. This guide outlines what works, what doesn’t, and how to troubleshoot common issues. Supported devices and Formats Naim products support a wide range of USB storage devices, including: USB flash drives Portable hard drives (self-powered or externally powered) To ensure compatibility: Format the drive as FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS. Avoid using drives with multiple partitions or encrypted volumes. Ensure the drive is not overloaded with too many files or folders, which can slow down indexing. Note: Some older Naim models may only support FAT32. Supported File Types The USB input supports playback of the following audio formats: WAV FLAC AIFF ALAC MP3 AAC OGG High-resolution files (up to 24-bit/384kHz) are supported on most modern Naim streamers and Uniti systems. Accessing USB Content in the Focal & Naim App Once a compatible USB device is connected: Open the Focal & Naim app. Select your device from the My Devices screen. Navigate to the USB input. Browse and play music directly from the drive. The app will scan the  USB device and display its contents in a structured format. You can browse by folder, artist, album, or genre (if metadata is available). The USB input is designed for: Direct music playback from USB storage devices. Firmware updates on legacy systems (via Mini-USB, not USB-A). It is not intended for use with USB DACs, smartphones in data mode, or streaming from mobile apps.

Using Naim products in different voltage regions

If you're relocating to a country with a different mains voltage—such as moving from a 230V region to a 115V region—it's essential to understand how your Naim product will be affected. This guide outlines the key considerations for using Naim devices in different voltage regions and what steps you may need to take to ensure safe and optimal operation. 1. Can I Use My Naim Product in a Different Voltage Region? The answer depends on the specific model and its internal power supply configuration. Only products which have an internal power supply require voltage conversion. In the case of products like the NAC 552 preamplifier, only its accompanying power supply would need to be converted. Using Naim Products in Different Voltage Regions Product Category Products Voltage Switchable Comment Network Streamers NSS 333, NDX 2, ND5 XS 2 ✗  No Must be returned to a Naim-authorised service centre for voltage conversion. Integrated Systems Uniti Atom, Uniti Atom HE, Uniti Star, Uniti Nova, Uniti Nova PE ✗  No Must be returned to a Naim-authorised service centre for conversion. The NAC-N 272, NSC 222 and NAC 332, which have internal power supplies, would require conversion. Power Amplifiers NAP 100, NAP 200-DR, NAP 250-DR, NAP 300-DR, NAP 250 (New Classic), NAP 350, NAP 500-DR ✗  No Must be returned to a Naim-authorised service centre for conversion. CD Players CD5si, CD5 XS, CDX2 ✗ No Must be returned to a Naim-authorised service centre for conversion. Wireless Systems Mu-so 2nd Generation, Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation ✓ Yes Only a new mains power lead is needed for use in a different voltage region.   2. Why Most Naim Products Are Not Voltage Switchable Naim products are engineered with dedicated power supplies optimized for performance and reliability. As a result, most models are factory-configured for a specific voltage (either 115V or 230V) and cannot be switched manually. Attempting to use a product in the wrong voltage region without proper conversion can result in serious damage and void the warranty. 3. What to Do If You're Moving If you're relocating to a country with a different mains voltage: Contact your local Naim distributor or retailer before moving. Arrange to have your product returned to Naim or an authorized service centre for voltage conversion. Ensure the conversion is completed before connecting the product to the new mains supply. Note: Voltage conversion is a professional service and will involve a fee. It also ensures that your product remains covered under warranty. 4. Exception: Mu-so 2nd Generation The Mu-so 2nd Generation is designed with a universal power supply that automatically adapts to different voltages (100V–240V). This means: No conversion is required. You can safely use it in any region with the appropriate plug adapter or regional mains cable. 5. Travel Adapters vs. Voltage Converters Plug adapters only change the plug shape and do not convert voltage. Voltage converters are not recommended for use with Naim products, as they can introduce noise and instability. Always use your Naim product with the correct voltage supply as configured by the manufacturer. Conclusion Before relocating with your Naim system, it's crucial to check whether your product is compatible with the voltage in your new region. While the Mu-so 2nd Generation is universally compatible, most other Naim products require professional voltage conversion.
