Adjusting remote control settings

Choosing between WAV and FLAC for CD ripping

When ripping CDs with a Naim server such as the Uniti Core, you can choose between WAV and FLAC formats.  WAV is an uncompressed format that offers the highest possible audio fidelity, but it lacks support for metadata like album art and track information. FLAC, on the other hand, is a lossless compressed format that retains full audio quality while allowing metadata tagging. For most users, FLAC is the preferred choice due to its balance of quality, file size, and usability. However, audiophiles seeking absolute purity may opt for WAV. Both formats are fully supported by Naim systems.

How do I rip to my streamer?

To rip CDs for playback on your Naim streamer, you’ll need a Naim server such as the Uniti Core.  Insert the CD into the Core’s drive, and it will automatically begin ripping the disc using your preferred format (WAV or FLAC). The ripped music is stored on the Core’s internal or external drive and indexed with metadata and album art. Once ripped, the music is available to your streamer via UPnP.  You can browse and play music using the Naim app or the streamer’s interface. This process ensures high-quality audio and seamless integration with your Naim system.

Internet radio with Naim: availability and setup Overview

Internet radio is available on all current Naim streaming products, including the Uniti range, Mu-so systems, and network players. It allows access to thousands of global stations via the Focal & Naim app. However, it is not available on the Uniti Core, which is a music server and does not include streaming capabilities. Accessing Internet Radio To browse and play internet radio stations: Open the Focal & Naim app. Select your device from the My Devices screen. Tap on the Radio input. Browse by location, genre, or search for a specific station. (Not available on Legacy Streamers) The app uses a curated directory to provide access to a wide range of stations. Setting and Managing Presets You can save your favourite stations as presets for quick access: While listening to a station, expand to full screen and tap the star icon to add it to your presets. To manage presets, go to the Radio input and tap the Presets tab. Presets can be renamed, reordered, or deleted from this menu. Presets are stored on the device and remain available even after app updates or restarts. Improving Streaming Stability If the internet radio stream drops out or buffers frequently: Ensure the device has a strong and stable network connection. If using Wi-Fi, try moving the device closer to the router or use a wired Ethernet connection. Avoid using mesh networks or extenders that may introduce latency or signal handoff issues. Restart your router and Naim device if problems persist.

Managing Metadata and album artwork

Metadata and album artwork are essential for organizing and enjoying your digital music collection. Whether you're using a Uniti Core to rip CDs or managing files from other sources, Naim provides tools to help you edit and enhance your music library. This guide explains how to change album artwork, force metadata lookups, and understand how genre information is handled.   Changing Album Artwork If the artwork for a ripped or imported album is incorrect or missing, you can update it manually using the Focal & Naim app. How to Change Artwork: Open the Focal & Naim app and navigate to the album. Tap the horizontal three dots next to the album cover, then tap ‘Edit metadata’. Select “Change cover”. Choose a new image from your device or from one of the listed search engines. Save the changes.  Artwork should be in JPEG format and ideally under 1MB for best compatibility. Forcing a Metadata Lookup If an album was ripped without an internet connection or metadata was incomplete, you can force the Uniti Core to re-identify it. How to Force a Lookup: Ensure your Uniti Core is connected to the internet. Open the Focal & Naim app. Navigate to the album with missing or incorrect metadata. Tap the edit icon and select “Re-identify”. The Core will search online databases and update the album details. ✓ This process can retrieve track names, artist info, release year, and artwork. Genre Handling in Metadata Naim systems display genre information based on the metadata embedded in your music files. However, genre tags can vary widely depending on the source. Key Points: Genres are shown in the Focal & Naim app and on device screens. If a file has no genre tag, it may appear as “Unknown” or be grouped with other untagged files. You can edit genre tags using the app (for ripped content) or third-party software (for external files imported onto the Core). Consistent genre tagging improves browsing and playlist creation. Final Tips Always rip CDs with an active internet connection to ensure complete metadata. Use the Focal & Naim app to manage your library and correct any missing information. For imported files, ensure metadata is properly embedded before transferring to your Naim system.

No album artwork is showing on the screen

Album artwork is a key part of the music experience, helping you visually connect with your music collection. If your Naim streamer isn’t displaying artwork—especially after ripping a CD with the Uniti Core—this guide explains why it happens and how to fix it. Common Scenarios There are two main situations where album artwork might not appear: 1. After Ripping a CD with Uniti Core You’ve just ripped a CD, but no artwork is showing on your Naim streamer or in the Focal & Naim app. 2. While Playing Music from a Server or USB Drive You’re browsing or playing music, but the album art is missing from the screen or app interface. Why Artwork Might Be Missing Here are the most common reasons: No Internet Connection During Ripping  The Uniti Core fetches artwork and metadata from online databases. If it’s offline during the rip, the CD will be saved without artwork. Metadata Not Found  Some CDs—especially rare or obscure ones—may not have artwork available in the online database. Artwork Not Embedded in Files  If you're playing music from a USB drive or external server, the files may not contain embedded artwork or may use unsupported formats. Please note that if playing from a USB connected storage device, Naim streamers will not be able to display the artwork File Format Limitations  Some formats (like WAV) do not support embedded artwork in a way that Naim devices can read consistently. How to Fix It ✓ If You Ripped the CD with Uniti Core: Reconnect to the Internet if it was offline during the rip. Open the Focal & Naim app. Navigate to the album with missing artwork. Use the app’s “Edit Metadata” feature to fetch or manually add artwork. ✓ If You’re Using External Files: Use a metadata editor to embed artwork into the files. Ensure the artwork is in JPEG format and under 1MB in size. Re-scan the music folder in the Focal & Naim app. Best Practices Always keep your Uniti Core connected to the internet when ripping CDs. Use FLAC instead of WAV if you want to ensure better metadata and artwork compatibility. Regularly update your Naim device firmware via the app to benefit from metadata handling improvements. Final Notes Missing artwork doesn’t affect playback quality but restoring it can greatly enhance your browsing and listening experience. If issues persist, consult your retailer or Naim Technical Support.

Ripping CDs with Naim Core

The Uniti Core is Naim’s dedicated music server and CD ripper, designed to help you build a high-quality digital music library with ease. Whether you're ripping your first CD or troubleshooting an issue, this guide explains how the process works, what to expect, and how to resolve common problems. How to Rip a CD Ripping a CD with the Uniti Core is simple and mostly automatic: Insert the CD into the Core’s disc drive. The unit will begin ripping automatically. Metadata (album name, artist, track titles, and artwork) is retrieved from online databases. The ripped files are stored in your designated music store on internal or external storage. ? You can manage ripped content and storage settings using the Focal & Naim app. What Happens If the CD Has Already Been Ripped? If you insert a CD that has already been ripped: The Uniti Core will recognize the duplicate and skip re-ripping. No duplicate files will be created. You can manually re-rip if needed by deleting the original version first. What Happens If There’s No Internet Connection? If the Uniti Core is not connected to the internet during ripping: The CD will still be ripped, but no metadata or artwork will be retrieved. The album will appear as “Unknown” with generic track names. Once internet is restored, you can re-look up the album using the app to fetch metadata. Troubleshooting CD Ripping Issues If your Uniti Core cannot rip a CD: 1. Check the CD Format Only standard audio CDs are supported. Data discs or enhanced CDs (such as HDCD) will not be recognized. 2. Inspect the Disc Dirty or scratched discs may fail to rip. Try cleaning the disc or using another copy. 3. Restart the Uniti Core Power cycle the unit and try again. 4. Check Storage Availability Ensure there is enough space on the internal or external drive. Use the app to verify storage status. 5. Update Firmware Make sure your Uniti Core is running the latest software via the Focal & Naim app. Final Tips When configuring the music store, you can choose between WAV or FLAC file formats. You can convert files to FLAC or other formats using third-party software if needed. Always keep your Uniti Core connected to the internet for accurate metadata and artwork.
