Troubleshooting the Naim remote control

Common Issues and Solutions If the remote control isn’t working with your Naim product, there are a few key areas to check. These steps apply to all models that include an IR or Zigbee remote, including products like the NDX 2 and ND555. 1. Check the Batteries Ensure the batteries are correctly inserted and not depleted. Replace with fresh batteries if necessary. Make sure the battery contacts are clean and properly aligned. 2. Confirm Remote Pairing (for Zigbee Remotes) Some Naim products use a Zigbee remote that must be paired with the unit: If the remote is unresponsive out of the box, it may not be paired. Follow the pairing instructions in the product’s Quick Start Guide or user manual. Typically, this involves holding a specific button combination while the unit is powered on. 3. Check Line of Sight (for IR Remotes) Ensure there is a clear line of sight between the remote and the front panel of the unit. Avoid obstructions or reflective surfaces that may interfere with the IR signal. 4. Restart the Product Power off the Naim unit completely. Wait a few seconds, then power it back on. Try using the remote again once the unit has fully restarted. 5. Use the Focal &  Naim App as a Backup If the remote remains unresponsive, the Focal & Naim app can be used to control all major functions, including input selection, volume, and playback.

UPnP and local playback: operation, compatibility and control

What Is UPnP? UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a protocol that allows Naim products to stream music from compatible servers on the same network. It enables playback of locally stored music from devices such as computers, NAS drives, or dedicated UPnP servers. Types of UPnP Servers There are several types of UPnP servers that can be used: Software-based servers: Installed on a computer (e.g. Asset UPnP, MinimServer, JRiver). NAS-based servers: Built into network-attached storage devices. Dedicated hardware servers: Such as the Uniti Core. These servers index music libraries and make them accessible to Naim streamers over the network. Recommended UPnP Servers The following servers are known to work well with Naim products: Asset UPnP MinimServer JRiver Media Center Twonky Server These options offer reliable indexing, metadata handling, and compatibility with high-resolution audio formats. UPnP vs DLNA While UPnP and DLNA are closely related, UPnP offers more flexibility and better support for advanced features such as gapless playback and high-resolution audio. DLNA is a subset of UPnP and may not support all features required for optimal performance with Naim products. Control Options UPnP playback can be controlled using: The Focal & Naim app Third-party control points (e.g. BubbleUPnP, mconnect) Remote controls (on supported models) The Focal & Naim app provides full browsing, playback, and queue management capabilities. Some models also allow basic UPnP navigation via the physical remote.

Using headphones with Uniti Atom HE

Dedicated Amplification for Headphone Listening The Uniti Atom Headphone Edition (HE) is designed specifically for headphone use, offering a high-performance alternative to traditional hi-fi systems. Unlike standard amplifiers that include speaker outputs, the Atom HE focuses entirely on headphone listening, delivering precision, power, and musicality. Its Class A/B discrete headphone amplifier, inspired by Naim’s flagship Statement amplifier, ensures dynamic and detailed sound reproduction. With up to 1.5W into 16 ohms, it can drive a wide range of headphones, including high-impedance and planar magnetic models. Headphone Compatibility: Impedance and Volume The Atom HE is compatible with headphones of various impedances. Whether you're using low-impedance in-ear monitors or high-impedance over-ear headphones, the amplifier adapts to deliver optimal performance. Volume levels may vary depending on the headphone’s impedance. High-impedance models typically require more power, but the Atom HE’s robust amplification ensures consistent dynamics and clarity across all types. Connecting Multiple Headphones The Atom HE offers three headphone outputs: 6.3mm jack (unbalanced) 4.4mm Pentaconn (balanced) XLR 4-pin (balanced, rear panel) While multiple headphones can be connected simultaneously, only one output is active at a time. The device automatically detects the active connection and disables the others to prevent signal conflicts. This feature allows users to switch between headphones easily without unplugging cables. Headphone Button Function The headphone button on the front panel allows users to toggle between headphone and speaker output modes. When headphones are connected, pressing the button activates the headphone output and mutes any other audio outputs. This ensures a seamless transition between private and shared listening.

Using playback controls on the Naim remote

The Naim remote control allows you to manage playback functions such as play, pause, skip, fast-forward, and rewind -depending on the source and device compatibility. These controls are especially useful when listening to music via UPnP, USB, or streaming services that support transport commands. For example, when playing music from a USB stick or a server, you can use the remote to skip tracks or rewind to a specific section.  However, some streaming services may have limitations on these functions due to licensing or app integration. Always ensure your firmware is up to date for the best compatibility.

Using the Naim remote with multiple devices

The Naim remote control is designed to work with a range of Naim products, particularly those in the Uniti and Classic series.  Depending on the model, the remote can control volume, playback, input selection, and other functions across multiple compatible devices. For example, a single remote can be used to control both a Uniti Atom and a Naim amplifier, provided they are within range and have line-of-sight for infrared (IR) communication.  Some remotes also support Zigbee wireless communication, which offers more reliable control without needing direct line-of-sight.  Always check your product’s manual for compatibility and pairing instructions.

Cable quality and performance

Cables are a critical part of any hi-fi system, and in a Naim setup, their quality, type, and positioning can significantly influence performance. This guide explains the importance of mains, signal, and speaker cables, and offers best practices for installation and management. 1. Do Mains Cables Affect Performance? Yes. The quality of your mains cable can impact the performance of your Naim system. Naim recommends using the supplied mains cable or a high-quality alternative that meets safety and performance standards. Avoid cheap or poorly shielded cables, which can introduce noise or be vulnerable to radio frequency interference. Ensure a clean power supply by avoiding shared sockets with noisy appliances such as laptop chargers, lamps or heaters. Where possible, use a dedicated mains earth spur for your hi-fi system. 2. What Kind of Loudspeaker Cable Should I Use? Naim recommends using Naim speaker cable, which is specifically designed to match the electrical characteristics of Naim amplifiers. Use 3.5mm² stranded copper cable with low capacitance and moderate inductance. Avoid high-capacitance cables, which can destabilise Naim amplifiers. Maintain a minimum length of 3.5 meters per channel to ensure proper loading. Optimum speaker cable length is between 5 and 10 metres per channel. 3. What Connectors Should My Speaker Cable Have? Naim speaker plugs are designed for optimal connection and performance: Use Naim 4mm speaker plugs, which are engineered to work with Naim’s output sockets. These plugs ensure a secure fit and maintain the correct impedance characteristics. Ask your Naim specialist retailer for assistance with termination and installation.   4. Cable Dressing and Layout Best Practices Proper cable management—also known as cable dressing—is essential for minimising interference and preserving signal integrity. Voltage Awareness Cables in a Naim system carry different voltage levels: Voltage Level Cable Type High Mains cables Medium Speaker cables Low Signal interconnects Keep low-voltage signal cables away from higher-voltage mains and speaker cables. Avoid running cables in parallel—cross them at right angles where necessary. Physical Placement Let signal cables hang freely in space where possible. Avoid resting cables against walls, floors, or furniture to reduce the impact of microphonic vibrations. Naim interconnects and SNAICs are designed to hang naturally with minimal strain on connectors. Environmental Considerations Avoid routing speaker cables near electrical ring mains (often behind skirting boards). Keep cables away from power supplies, transformers, and Wi-Fi routers to reduce interference. 5. Summary of Recommendations Cable Type Recommendation Mains Cable Use Naim-supplied or high-quality shielded cable. Avoid shared sockets. Use the Naim Power Line provides optimal performance. Speaker Cable Use Naim speaker cable, either NAC A5 or Super Lumina, a minimum of 3.5m per channel. Connectors Use Naim 4mm speaker plugs for optimal fit and performance. Signal Cables Keep separate from mains and speaker cables. Let them hang freely.

Cleaning and maintaining your Naim device

To ensure your Naim product continues to deliver exceptional performance and longevity, regular care and maintenance are essential. Whether you own a Mu-so 2nd Generation, a network player like the NDX 2, or a reference-level streamer like the ND555, this guide outlines the best practices for cleaning and maintaining your device safely and effectively. 1. General Cleaning Guidelines All Naim products are built with premium materials and finishes. To preserve their appearance and function: Always disconnect the unit from the mains power before cleaning. Use a soft, lint-free cloth (such as microfiber) to gently wipe the surfaces. Avoid abrasive materials, paper towels, or rough cloths that could scratch the finish. Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or sprays directly on the unit. Tip: A slightly damp cloth with clean water is sufficient for most cleaning needs. Dry immediately with a soft cloth. 2. Cleaning the Front Panel and Display For devices with touchscreens or displays (e.g., NDX 2, ND555, Mu-so): Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and dust. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with water—never apply liquid directly to the screen. Avoid pressing too hard on the display to prevent damage. 3. Ventilation and Dust Management Proper airflow is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and preventing overheating. Ensure that ventilation slots and grilles are free from dust and obstructions. Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean vents. Keep the area around the device clear to allow for adequate airflow. Note: For Mu-so systems, pay special attention to the underside and rear grille where dust can accumulate. 4. Cable and Connection Care Periodically check that all cables are securely connected and free from dust or corrosion. Avoid bending or twisting cables excessively. When unplugging, or reconnecting, always grip the connector—not the cable itself. Tip: The best way to clean the contacts of your interconnects is, every so often, is to power down the Naim products they connect, then plug and unplug the interconnect 10 – 20 times. Doing so will remove any surface level corrosion on the pins without the need for additional cleaning measures. 5. Environmental Considerations To protect your Naim device: Keep it away from heat sources, and moisture. Avoid placing objects on top of the unit, especially those that could block ventilation. Maintain a stable, vibration-free surface for optimal playback performance. The Naim Fraim racking system is optimal. 6. Firmware and Software Updates Regular updates ensure your device benefits from the latest features and performance improvements. Use the Focal & Naim App to check for and install firmware updates. Ensure your device is connected to the internet for automatic update notifications. Conclusion With just a few simple steps, you can keep your Naim device looking pristine and performing at its best for years to come. Regular cleaning, proper ventilation, and mindful handling go a long way in preserving the quality and longevity of your investment.
