How do I configure my Naim server’s UPnP settings?

The HDX and UnitiServe operate as a UPnP music server providing music files to any network attached UPnP-compatible playback device. Selecting UPnP Settings from the System menu opens the UPnP Settings Menu to enable the UnitiServe UPnP settings to be configured appropriately. Server Name: Select Server Name to specify the name of the UnitiServe UPnP server that will be seen by UPnP playback devices. The name can be changed by selecting the name field to open a text-entry screen. Connected UPnP playback devices will have to be restarted if the UnitiServe name is changed. Device Views: Select Device Views to specify how the UPnP playback device views and browses the music files available on the UnitiServe and any connected Network Share or USB device.  Select All Music to view and browse all the files available to the UnitiServe. How do I reset my Uniti Star and Uniti Core to Factory Default Settings?

Resetting your Naim product to factory default settings can resolve persistent issues or prepare the device for a new setup.  To reset a Uniti Core, firstly unplug any connected speakers and the power cable. When turning on the power to the Uniti Core, hold down the Standby button (for about 20 seconds) until the Naim logo and Front USB LED flashes multiple times. Then release the Standby button.  To reset a Uniti Star, first unplug any connected speakers and the power cable, then press and hold the Play/Pause and Input buttons on the front panel while reconnecting the power; continue holding for five seconds, release the buttons, wait for the unit to complete the reset and enter standby mode, and finally press the power button to turn the product back on.   Alternatively, use the front screen to access the reset option under factory settings.  This process will erase all user settings, including network configurations and library indexing, but will not delete music stored on internal or external drives. After the reset, you’ll need to reconfigure the device as if it were new.

Managing wireless settings on Naim devices

There is currently no option to manually disable Wi-Fi on Naim devices. If you prefer a wired connection, simply connecting an Ethernet cable will automatically override the wireless connection. The Wi-Fi radio remains active in the background, but the device will prioritize the Ethernet connection for all network activity. There is no setting in the Focal&Naim app or on the device to turn off Wi-Fi entirely, and a factory reset will not disable it either.

Placement and environment considerations

Proper placement of your Naim equipment is essential for optimal performance. Always place your device on a stable, level surface—ideally a dedicated equipment rack like Naim’s Fraim or Fraim Lite.  Ensure there is adequate ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating.  Avoid stacking components directly on top of each other, as the electromagnetic fields from power supplies can interfere with audio circuitry.  Isolating units and minimising vibration transfer helps preserve audio fidelity and system longevity. Vibrations, whether microphonic or mechanical, can also affect sound quality, especially with CD playback.

Troubleshooting display and indicator issues

If the logo bar or display on your Naim device is not illuminated, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot.  First, check the brightness settings in the Naim app or on the device itself, lighting may have been turned off or dimmed.  Ensure the unit is powered on and properly connected. If the issue persists, try performing a factory reset.  In rare cases, a firmware update or hardware fault may be the cause.  If none of these steps resolve the issue, contact Naim support for further assistance.

Understanding power modes and standby behavior

Power management is a key aspect of Naim’s product design, balancing performance, convenience, and energy efficiency. Whether you're using a classic amplifier, a modern streamer, or an all-in-one system, understanding how your device handles power and standby modes will help you get the most out of your setup. This guide explains the different power modes, the role of external power supplies, and why some products are designed with fixed power configurations. Power Modes Explained Naim products typically operate in one of three power states: 1. On (Operational Mode) The device is fully powered and ready to deliver optimal performance. In this mode, all circuits are active, and the product is ready to play music or respond to commands. 2. Standby Mode Standby reduces power consumption while keeping the device ready for quick activation. Depending on the product, standby may: Keep network connections alive Maintain clock synchronization Allow remote wake-up via app or control system Note: Some legacy products do not support modern standby behavior and must be manually powered off. 3. Sleep Standby This is a deeper standby mode available on newer Naim products. It further reduces power consumption while still allowing: Wake-up via app or remote Retention of basic system state Sleep Standby is ideal for energy-saving without fully powering down the unit. 4. Off The device is completely powered down. This is typically done via a rear power switch or by unplugging the unit. In this state, no functionality is available until the device is turned back on. Why Power Supplies Matter External power supplies are a hallmark of Naim’s modular upgrade philosophy. They serve several purposes: Isolate sensitive circuits from noise and interference Provide cleaner, more stable power to analogueue and digital sections Enable performance upgrades without replacing the entire unit For example: The NDX 2 can be upgraded with an XPS DR or 555 PS DR The ND555 requires at least one 555 PS DR, with the option to add a second for further enhancement These upgrades improve dynamics, detail, and musicality by reducing internal noise and improving voltage regulation. Why Some Products Can’t Be Upgraded Certain Naim products, such as the NaimUniti, UnitiQute, SuperUniti, and UnitiServe, were designed as all-in-one systems. Their internal architecture integrates power supply and audio circuitry in a way that does not support external upgrades. This design choice ensures: Compact form factor Simplified user experience Lower cost of ownership While these products cannot be upgraded with external power supplies, they still benefit from proper placement, high-quality cables, and firmware updates. Why Include Power Supplies in Upgradeable Products? Even in products that support external power supplies, Naim includes an internal supply to ensure out-of-the-box functionality. This allows users to enjoy excellent performance immediately, with the option to upgrade later. Including a built-in supply also: Ensures compatibility with a wide range of setups Allows users to evaluate the product before investing in upgrades Maintains resale value and flexibility Final Tips Use standby mode when not listening to music to reduce energy usage while keeping your system responsive. Consider external power supplies if your product supports them—they offer one of the most impactful upgrades. Consult your dealer to explore upgrade paths and ensure compatibility. Keep firmware updated using the Focal & Naim app for optimal power management and performance

  • Setup & Connectivity

Do I need to ground my streamer?

Grounding your Naim streamer can help reduce electrical noise and improve overall sound quality, especially in complex systems with multiple components.  Most Naim streamers include a grounding switch that allows you to select between “floating” and “grounded” modes.  If your streamer is the only source connected to your amplifier, grounding may be beneficial. However, if multiple grounded devices are connected, it could introduce ground loops, causing hum or interference. In such cases, setting the streamer to “floating” may be preferable.  Always refer to your product’s manual or consult Naim support for guidance tailored to your setup.
